Everything in the Guianas is remote
Access to a qualified medical doctor could take more than a day if you are traveling in the interior regions where transportation is limited to non-existent roads, small boats, and infrequent aircraft .
In the event of a serious medical situation, a referral to the nearest western-standard medical care facilities would likely take you to Port-of-Spain (Trinidad and Tobago), Puerto Rico, or Miami, Florida (US). None of these can be reached quickly, even with emergency air ambulance facilities.
Senior travelers and those with critical medical risks should plan accordingly or discuss alternative destinations with their travel planner.
Guyana Medical Care
Medical care services and facilities do not meet western standards of care, including those in Georgetown, the capital. Shortages of routine medications and supplies may be encountered. There are virtually no medical care services in Guyana’s interior other than basic first aid kits.
Suriname Medical Care
Medical care services and facilities may or may not meet western standards of care. The best facilities and most highly qualified medical staff will be found in Paramaribo, the capital. Shortages of routine medications and supplies may be encountered. There are virtually no medical care services in Suriname’s interior other than basic first aid kits.
Medical and Evacuation Insurance
If there were ever a part of the world where traveller medical and evacuation insurance made sense, it’s Guyana and Suriname. Just the aircraft portion of a medical evacuation from either of these countries could exceed $125,000 USD alone. Don’t chance it. Prepare well for your trip and cover all your contingencies. Chances are you won’t need them, but if you do, you’ll be thankful beyond measure.
