Outside of the capital Georgetown, telephone access in Guyana is essentially non-existent. Lodges in the interior are reachable only by VHF radio or intermittent satellite internet connections. The situation is similar in Suriname and French Guiana. While Dominica’s communication infrastructure is mostly reliable, bad weather and the remote nature of the island continue to present communication challenges. Recent years have seen installation of remote cellular towers in each country, but range and reliability of their signals is unpredictable.
If you have an urgent need to contact a traveller on a Wilderness Explorers tour, it is best to contact our office in Georgetown and ask our staff to relay a message for you. Please restrict such requests to extremely urgent or emergency matters only. Given the remote nature of most tourist destinations in our service area, it may take several days for a message to be delivered and acknowledged.
