Day 1 Wednesday 15th March
We all gathered at Gatwick in good time to do last minute shopping before boarding our Virgin flight to Barbados which left on time. The flight was very comfortable with a half full plane and with the advantage of in-flight movies and meals we were soon in Grantley Adams Airport in Barbados sampling our first stint of Caribbean birding. Around the perimeter of the airport we saw Eared Doves, Shiny Cowbirds and Carib Crackles in good numbers and a strange little finch which was later identified as lesser Antillean Bullfinch. The connection flight was a four hour wait but the BWIA stage of the journey only took one hour and the doors of the aircraft opened at Ogle International to a warm blast of air even in the darkness. The journey to our first accommodation at Cara Lodge took an hour and we settled down to a delicious al-a-carte meal before much needed sleep.
Day 2 Thursday 16th March
A few early risers were starting the Guyanan list with the grounds of the hotel, with Yellow-bellied Elaenia, Fork-tailed Woodnymph and Social Flycatcher being amongst the first to be seen. Following breakfast we transferred to the local airport for our flight to Kaieteur Falls. The group was split into two small Islander planes and we were soon heading south-east over expanses of rain forest as far as the eye could see. The forest cover was only broken by the huge Demerara and Essequibo rivers and the occasional gold or diamond mine. Skillfully weaving between the clouds the pilot took the plane up the ravine to the approach of the falls and suddenly the splendor of the worlds highest single-drop falls was in front of us. We made two passes of the falls enabling photos from both the left and right sides of the plane before landing on the flat topped plateau which inspired Conan-Doyle’s Lost Planet.
Cheeco our guide lead us past the huge giant bromeliads which held the famous Golden Frogs that spends all its life in the micro habitat, before heading into the jungle. Virtually the first birds were a pair of magnificent Red and Green Macaws which flew noisily before us then began feeding in the fruiting trees. However these were overshadowed by an excellent male Guianan Cock of the Rock, voted by most as the bird of the day. Our first viewpoint was splendid as the brown waters cascaded over the lip of the falls and descended 822 feet into the gorge forming clouds of spray. Over us were clouds of White-chinned Swifts with the occasional huge White-collared Swift above them and a marauding Bat Falcon scattering the flocks. We then headed to another view point for more photos. After all this excitement we made our way back to the airfield for a delightful lunch of pasta, chicken, fish and ‘banana fizzy pot’!
After lunch we took to the skies again for our flight back to Ogle international Airport where we transferred by taxi to Sand Hills pier and a slow boat along the Pokerero Creek to Timberhead Resort on the edge of the lowland forest. There were some memorable sights from the boat with both Green and Green and Rufous Kingfishers sighted, a White-browed Purple Tuft was new to many and a huge Lineated Woodpecker showed well. However the best sighting was not of a bird but a Three-toed Sloth slowly moving under a branch.
Arrival at Timberheads brought more new birds for the trip as dusk rain began to fall. Red-shouldered and Red-bellied Macaws argued over roost sites in the Moriche Palms, occasionally upset by Yellow-headed Caracaras. A Moriche Oriole called loudly from the top of a tree showing off its yellow capped head and a Black-throated Aracari sat above the tree above the restaurant ready to roost. The evening meal was a hearty selection of fish, beef, vegetables and potato, washed down with an excellent local Banks beer. A brief log call was made before we headed to out rustic accommodation to sleep with the sounds of Pauraque and Whip-poor-wills calling.
Day 3 Friday 17th March
Alarms set, we met at 5.30am for coffee and toast before heading up stream to a forest reserve where we enjoyed some superb early morning birding on the forest edge. Woodpeckers were abundant, mainly Yellow-tufted but also Lineated and Crimson Crested sat together for comparison. Sharp eyes found two roosting Blackish Nightjars while overhead both Black-throated and Green Aracaris moved from tree to tree. We became so enthralled by birds that breakfast was forgotten about but eventually after more new species for the list we boarded the boat back to Timberhead and a breakfast of eggs, sausage and toast.
After breakfast and a short rest we headed off onto one the forest trails which was quiet with the heat rising, but as we got to the forest edge we found a few new species such as Blue Dacnis, Brown-crested Flycatcher and Turquoise Tanager. We returned back towards the resort for a rest out of the sun before a lunch.
As the heat began to subside in the afternoon, we took a boat upstream to walk the forest trail back to ‘camp’. En route we flushed Wilson’s Snipe and had good views of Least Bittern on the edge of the river. Again the walk in the forest was quiet with Undulated Tinamou calling and a ‘sprite’ refusing to show itself but calling loudly in the tree tops. However a Violaceous Trogan pair did not escape the sharp eyes of the group. Back at base camp we found a Masked Yellowthroat close to the dining room before the light faded and we settled down to a refreshing local Bank’s beer and dinner.
After dinner our guides took us back onto the river to successfully lamp Spectacled Cayman and also back on dry land we had excellent views of a sitting Pauraque, a huge Wolf Spider and a ‘small’ Marine Toad. With another early start promised we retired to bed after coffee to the sounds of Whip-poor-wills and Common Potoos.
Day 4 Saturday 18th March
We gathered again at 5.30am for toast and coffee before heading upstream to the previous days morning walk. This time we hardly moved away from the boat when we found a fruiting tree which seemed to be attracting all the birds of the area. New birds came thick and fast, Barred Antshrike eventually seen, Pink-throated Becard and White-bearded Manakins to mention but a few. We also had excellent views of species we had already recorded such as Paradise Jacamar, White-throated Toucan and Red-fanned Parrott. We had to drag ourselves away for breakfast as we were due to move on from Timberhead to Shanklands Resort.
The boat trip away produced good flight views of both Green and Green and Rufous Kingfisher again and also new species in the form of Black -capped Donacobius and a huge Great Potoo asleep on a tree. Turning out of the creek we entered the wide waters of the Demerara to the landing stage at Sand Hills. We had a little time to spare as we waited for the 4×4 vehicles and added a pair of Black-crested Antshrikes and Dusky Antbirds to the list.
The 4×4 journey took us through both sand forest and rain forest for about 20 miles and some of the roughest tracks we had seen. Unfortunately those in the following vehicle wee showered in dust which, by the time we had arrived at Shanklands made them look as if they had just emerged from a shift ‘down t’pit’! Rain showers had been the order of the day and we arrived slightly damp and dirty to a well deserved lunch of fish, vegetables, rice and bananas, washed down with fresh lemonade.
We met up with our guide Leonard after lunch and walked around the grounds in between rain showers. The only fruiting fig tree on the resort hosted a number of species, some new for the trip. Yellow and Blackpoll Warblers fed on the fruits as did a pair of Bay-headed Tanagers. Squawking groups of parrots flew overhead and diminutive Green-rumped Parrotlets were new. As the light began to fade and the rain set in a superb Sunbittern fed on the grass lawn, hunting like a wader, and bringing the entire group out from their shelters. Finally before lunch a Fork-tailed Flycatcher made sallying flights into the air for insects, this migrant proving to be new for the local guide.
After a dinner of pork chops and vegetables we tried unsuccessfully to entice any owls into our spotlight, the night being strangely silent compared to the noises at Timberhead.
Day 5 Sunday 19th March
We gathered at 6am with clouds obliterating the sunrise and spent some time watching the fruiting fig tree. The orange on the Golden-winged Parakeets proved hard to see but a noisy Red-throated Caracara was a good sighting, chased off by the resident Plumbeous Kite. Two Spix’s Guans fed briefly in the fig tree before we set off on a walk around the grounds with Leonard. A small resident Spectacled Cayman was confiding on a small pond within the grounds and both White-necked Jacobin and White-tipped Sabrewing fed on the flowers of a Mimosa close by. Another Slatey Antbird appeared in the forest edge as we made our way to a larger pool close to the river. Surprisingly there was only a Striated Heron in the pool vegetation but some got good ‘scope views of Scaled Pigeon. As we returned for breakfast the rain started but this did not deter two Blue and yellow Macaws flying over as we enjoyed our fruit and bacon with scrambled eggs.
After breakfast some regrouped to follow Leonard on a jungle trail walk. As with our previous experiences this was relatively quiet although we got good views of both Golden and White-capped Manakins and Leonard showed us a small scorpion in the middle of the path. As the day heated up we returned to the resort, finding the Sunbittern again, for a cooling drink before lunch.
We were very fortunate with the weather as the skies darkened over lunch and we had a short , sharp downfall with thunder. By the time we were ready for our afternoon walk with Leonard, the weather had improved. We walked the trail back through the local village and along the track we had driven in on. This proved to be very rewarding as we had great views of the forest edge and added amongst others, two Channel-billed Toucans and two Bran-coloured Flycatchers, a female Pompadour Cotinga, Chestnut Woodpecker, Golden-sided Euphonia and a flock of Yellow-green Grosbeaks.
We returned as dusk fell for an excellent evening meal of chicken, rice and vegetables. A small group tried again unsuccessfully in the evening to lure owls from the forest although dancing fireflies kept us entertained. We retired for an early night ready for our move the next day to Karanambu.
Day 6 Monday 20th March
We rose to an early breakfast before heading for the ‘speedboat’ at 6am to travel down the mighty Essequibo River to meet up with our transport to the airport. We weighed our luggage at the airport with fingers crossed and after having our details taken in the ‘high-tec’ immigration ledger we were heading out SW over miles of forest and into cloud. After a short 1.5 hour trip the clouds parted to reveal a great expanse of savannah and three 4×4 vehicles waiting by our dirt landing strip. We were greeted by Edward McTurk and his staff and whipped off to Karanambu where Diane McTurk awaited with cool drinks and lunch. Even while chatting over drinks we added Burnish-buff Tanager and Red-capped Cardinal. Following lunch Edward took us on a familiarisation tour to the river where an incredibly tame Jabiru marched about and Pied Plover fed on the sand bar.
Our organised trip on the river was at 4pm so the group decided to relax or swim.
At four 4pm we gathered down by the river where we were greeted by rescued Giant River Otters and then boarded three small boats for a journey down river to Rupununi River and its accompanying lake. This was an excellent way to see wildlife and more new species were added to the list. Cocoi or White-neck Herons were everywhere as were Ringed and Amazon Kingfishers. We successfully stalked juvenile and adult Agami Herons and drifted up to a roost of huge billed Boat-billed Herons. As the light faded a group of Brown-bearded Sakis settled down to sleep in the trees as both Lesser Nighthawk and Band-tailed Nighthawks hunted over the water. A gaudy looking Roseate Spoonbill flew over with a pair of Wood Storks and we stopped at the end of the second lake to watch the flowers of the giant Victoria amazonica water lilies opening at dusk while drinking rum punch and eating nut biscuits.
Just as we finished photographing the lilies, the heavens open and we donned our yellow ‘Disneyland’ type ponchos and headed back using a spotlight to find Amazon Tree Boas, Black Cayman and swimming Capybara. We eventually arrived back at Karanambu wet but highly satisfied and after a change of clothing settled down to a hearty meal followed by the day’s log.
Day 7 Tuesday 21st March
We had a lie in today and coffee was ready for 6am before set off on a 3 mile walk through scrub, rain forest eventually arriving at a hidden lake covered in Victoria lilies. En route we manage to see many species some new for the trip such as Blue-backed Manakin, Helmeted Pygmy Tyrant, also managing to see the secretive Screaming Piha. As we approached the lake we flushed both Lesser Nighthawk and White-tailed Nightjar from their daytime roosts and the lake produce Wattled Jacana, American Purple Gallinule but best of all three wild Giant River Otters hunting amongst the lily pads.
Following a late breakfast the group had time to relax either birding or making good use of the outside hammocks followed by a late lunch. As the afternoon cooled down we headed off up river to Crane Pond in much better weather than the previous evening. Kingfishers of all shapes and sizes flashed by and we had good views of Black Nunbird as they sallied from tree tops bordering the river. Crane pond, named because of its shape, had dozens of Wattled Jacana, Great White, Snowy Egrets and Little Blue Herons, Black-capped Donacobius fed on the edge of water vegetation and a huge Black Cayman lingered offshore. Yet another wild Giant River Otter watched us inquisitively offshore and as dusk fell a party of 21 Black-crowned Night Herons edged out of their daytime roosts in the trees.
We spent the next hour drifting back down river, drinking rum punch and nibbling biscuits as we spot-lighted Cayman, Great Bulldog Bats and a superbly coloured Capped Heron. We arrived back at Karanambu for drinks and dinner before completing the daily log.
Day 8 Wednesday 22nd March
We spent our last morning at Karanambu back on the river heading up stream to some more ponds. From the boat we added Yellow-breasted and Plumbeous Seedeater and Grey Hawk and saw many wild Muscovy Ducks flying around. The weather was pleasantly overcast with a cooling breeze and we relaxed in the boats as we headed back for breakfast. Before lunch we had time to pack and do some last minute birding then had to reluctantly say goodbye to Diane, Edward and Melanie as we headed out over the savannah to Rock View.
The two 4×4’s headed out over the stony track across the savannah with Fork-tailed Flycatchers seen around every turn. Our first stop overlooking a flooded pond produced Savannah Hawk and Eastern Meadowlark and both Ruddy-breaded and Grey Seedeaters. Moving a little further we flushed a wader from the track which proved to be an Upland Sandpiper. This rare migrant to the area was the first record for the savannah according to Kenneth.
Our next scheduled stop at a small muddy pond was short lived as we disturbed a colony of vicious African Bees, which promptly stung three of the group (including one of the leaders) causing a hasty departure, not before ticking off a Pale-legged Hornero feeding along the shore. We continued towards the hills we had seen in the distance and as we approached the ‘main road’ (a dirt cover track) a bright orange and black bird crossed on front of the vehicles and settled in a tree. The proved to be a male Orange-backed Troupial. Further along the road we stopped two further times to watch a displaying male Vermillion Flycatcher, Blue-tailed Emeralds and Blue Ground Dove.
Our overnight stop was Rock View, more luxurious than the recent accommodation but not quite the same atmosphere – however the pool was inviting to many. Following dinner a small group went out ‘owling’ and this time successfully enticed a Tropical Screech Owl out of hiding to blink at us.
Day 9 Thursday 23rd March
We did our usual early morning walk with our guide Hendrix to the foothill forest of the Rock View nature trail. Initially apart from calls all seemed quiet but locating a fruiting tree, birds began to arrive thick and fast, and from our high viewpoint we were able to get some good views. Squabbling parties of Palm Tanagers were in the majority but we also saw both White-lored and Southern Beardless Tyrannulets, Black-tailed Tityra, Cayenne Jay and a strange black and yellow Icterus, which turned out to be an Epaulet Oriole. Following a brief rest we slowly made our way back down the hill and found a small green and yellow flycatcher building a hanging nest over the path. The type of nest clinched the ID of the Ochre-lored Flatbill, only to be confused with the Yellow Tyrannulet which has a cupped nest. Alongside the track a pair of Guianan Slaty Antshrikes foraged in the bushes and also a pair of White-bellied Antbirds hunted in the leaf litter.
We arrived back for breakfast around 9.15 following which the group had free time to explore the grounds and surrounding area, just relax as the sun broke through or catch up with civilisation via emails! It was incredibly hot, some the group spent some R&R around the site, relaxing in the shade or in the pool.
As it began to cool some went off site in the only available transport to walk along the forest edge and the savannah whilst others wondered around the wooded hill alongside the runway. The off-site group added Green Oropendula and Lesser Swallow-tailed Swift to the list while those who remained watched four large Nacunda Nighthawks and a Least Nighthawk set off on their feeding forays over the savannah. Dinner was taken under the mango tree followed by an unsuccessful search for yesterdays Tropical Screech-owl (although some found it near to the dining site later).
Day 10 Friday 24th March
Another transfer day, to Irowkrama Research Station, via the canopy walkway in the Irowkrama reserve. We set off just before 5am in two 4×4 pickups, the lead one having a raised ‘air conditioned’ hunting seat above the cab accommodating the leaders and David. We arrived at the new buildings at the walkway just after 6am and set off up the steep hill to the suspended bridges. The group divided onto the two best viewing platforms high in the canopy and initially things seemed quiet as there no fruiting trees nearby. Two screaming Red-throated Caracaras kept us entertained with noisy Painted Parakeets heard (only two seen in flight). Some of the group saw a gaudy male Spangled Cotinga and Band-rumped Swifts hunted over the trees. After about an hour birds began to move through the forest and pass by the walkway. First a Guianan Toucanet showed well followed by a procession of tanagers, best being two each of Bay-headed and Spotted and a superb Paradise male. Both Red-legged and Purple Honeycreepers were seen together with our first Long-tailed Woodcreeper and an aptly named Waved Woodpecker. This turned out to be a great experience and we reluctantly returned to the buildings where our packed breakfast had been laid out.
Having been suitably refreshed we rejoined our transport to continue our journey to the research centre. The ‘hunting seat’ spotters had earned their keep by banging on the cab roof when anything out of the ordinary was seen. This method gave us good views of both Scarlet and Red and Green Macaws and Short-tailed Hawk, as well as two elegant Swallow-tailed Kites and abundant Plumbeous Kites. We arrived at the River Essequibo where our boats quickly got us to the field station to settle into the well appointed cabins before lunch. Following our usual post-lunch siesta, we met our guides Albert and Lewis who took us along the Bushmaster and Screaming Piha trails (the second aptly named, the former only one ever recorded). Unfortunately the heavens opened as we started and for about 2/3rds of the trail we saw nothing but as the rain stopped and the sun came out we found a pair of Slaty Antbirds and Buff-throated Woodcreeper. As we emerged from the forest all the activity seemed to centre on the research station with Red and Green Macaws, Blue-headed Parrots, Bat Falcons and Plumbeous Kites sat in the trees with Yellow-throated and numerous ‘common’ tanagers feeding on the edge of the forest. Following our 6.30pm dinner most of the group went ‘lamping’ Caiman on the river, but the rain shortened the trip with only two Caiman seen.
Day 11 Saturday 25th March
Coffee was ready at 5.30am and we were heading around the offshore island by boat at 6.15. The first birds we saw were a group of Red and Green Macaws flying across the river, then three Black Skimmers and a Large-billed Tern. As we cruised up the far side of the island a pair of Waved Woodpeckers crossed the river and both Blue-headed and Orange-winged Parrots called from the forest. We came across a small gathering of familiar Bank Swallows (Sand Martins) and also added Black-collared Swallow to the list. It had been a pleasant morning cruising on the tranquil Essequibo as were returned for breakfast.
The group gathered again at 8.30 and we headed by boat, this time upstream to walk the trail that led to Turtle Mountain. This 2.5km trail gently rose from the river for 2km then there was a steep climb for 0.5m to the top, passing through some lush rain forest. The birders started to be left behind as new species were found. A ghostly Cream-coloured Woodpecker chiseled into a tree and a sleeping Rufescent Tiger-heron was found by the small pond. A little further we sheltered from a sudden downpour at Turtle Mountain Camp, a satellite camp of the research centre. We continued after the rain to find a small feeding flock of birds including Cinereous Antshrike, Barred and Straight-billed Woodpecker and a diminutive Gold-spangled Piculet. The lead group reached the summit to be rewarded with stunning views over the rain forest and the Essequibo river and were joined by some of the birders to have juice and sandwiches. What was thought to be a dark phase Crested Eagle soared over the forest then it was time to descend for lunch back at base.
Following lunch we sailed downstream to the close-by Amerindian village to look for parrots. However this was short-lived due to a spectacular thunder storm, although we did see a pair of Blue and Yellow Macaws and Grey-breasted Sabrewing.
The rain continued on and off for the rest of daylight hours so we took the opportunity to shower and rest before dinner.
Day 12 Sunday 26th March
Change over day to Surama, we breakfasted at 6pm and were loaded into our boats at 6.45 for the short trip to meet up with our better appointed 4×4’s.
We traveled the road back through the Irowkrama reserve stopping at many places to watch Red and Green Macaws, Swallow-tailed and Plumbeous Kites. A little way along the road we came across a freshly dead Grey-winged Trumpeter which we stopped to examine and promptly found the rest of the flock just inside the wood. Further stops produced brief views of Black Curassow and a splendid Marail Guan in a tree.
As we approached the furthest gate we were met by a guide who took us to a Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock lek but we were unfortunately too late but managed to see a black female. Another good find here was a fully grown Yellow-footed Tortoise foraging in the rocks.
We continued our journey to arrive at Surama Eco Lodges, slightly less luxurious than our previous venues where lunch was waiting for us.
Following lunch and a siesta we were joined by Lionel James from the village council who took on a three mile circular walk through the forest. As with all the forests this time of day it appeared very quiet and our quest for the Capuchin bird failed. We did however add Blue-crowned Motmot, Grassland Sparrow and Wedge-tailed Grass-finch to the list. The sight of the lodges as we turned a corner was most welcome in the heat as were the cooling showers after a ‘beef stew’ dinner. With the lack of electricity the log was done under torchlight before early retirement to bed.
Day 13 Monday 27th March
Coffee was ready at 5.30am and as the day dawned we were met by Milner our guide for the day. Straight away he was given a list of target birds, top two being Capuchin Bird and Blue-cheeked Parrot (for David). He smiled at the first but frowned at the latter. We set off across the savannah heading for a different stretch of forest. On route we saw amongst other species Black-headed Parrot and Mealy Amazons. As we walked into the forest, after short while Milner grinned and indicated Capuchin bird then promptly lead us off the path through what seemed uncharted forest. After 10 minutes we were staring up into the canopy at these strange rusty brown, bared necked cotingas giving excellent ‘scope views. Smiles appeared on every face and we then headed towards the Burro Burro River camp for packed breakfast.
This was followed by a peaceful cruise up river in traditional dug out canoes powered by our guides. From the boats we saw White-banded Swallows, King Vulture, Blue-crowned Motmot, Pygmy Antwren and heard Buff-breasted Wren, and also disturbed a large red snake from the bank, known locally as ‘fire snake’ by the Amerindians. Drifting back with the current Red-rumped Caciques, Black Nunbirds and Silver-beaked Tanagers feed in the bank side vegetation whilst myriads of red and green tiny damselflies fed over the water. Arriving back at the river camp we rested then started the three mile walk back to base stopping to see a Pearl Kite eating a lizard, also a pair of Variegated Flycatchers and an Golden-winged Parakeet.
After a good morning, lunch was enjoyed back at base followed by a siesta before our next excursion at 3pm.
Part of the group went out in the afternoon with Milner and we walked across some dusty burnt savannah which was infested with flies so we soon made our way back through forest to avoid the insects. We got glimpses of Dusky-capped Flycatcher, Long-tailed Grass-finch, the ever present Swallow-tailed Kite and found a Common Ground Dove nest with two eggs. We returned for much cherished tepid showers, drink and dinner.
Day 14 Tuesday 28th March
An early coffee preceded our 6.15 walk across the savannah heading back into the forest towards Burro Burro River camp. Mealy Parrots, Painted Parakeets and Red and Green Macaws were seen before we entered the trees and a Bright-rumped Attila was calling in the distant trees. As we walked the double-rutted track a large bird crossed in front followed by a second in ‘road-runner’ style. Milner said Rufous-winged Ground-cuckoo which excited Xavier as this is a very rare and hard to see species. Milner lead us onto the forest where they went and we could hear movement and the occasional ‘clicking’ calls but no sighting. We rejoined the track and Milner started to imitate their call and suddenly one crossed the track behind giving another fleeting glimpse of this ground dweller. Everyone had seen a bit of the bird and with this we continued our trip towards the river. Where a dried up stream crossed the track a pair of Great Jacamar were found enabling those who missed out at Irowkrama an opportunity to appreciate the size of this species. We continued to the camp listening to Capuchin birds and Screaming Pihas to have our packed breakfast.
Our ‘oarsmen’ then took us on a trip down the Burro Burro river, skillfully avoiding the sunken logs and exposed rocks where we saw three species of kingfisher, White-banded Swallows, Rufescent Tiger Heron and Yellow-throated Woodpecker, to name a few. With the heat rising the return walk to our base was quiet and following lunch we rested until the heat subsided.
The group had different ideas on what they wanted to do, some returning to the forest at 3pm, some at 3.30 and other staying in the vicinity of base. The log call in the evening proved that the afternoon forest walk had been beneficial with Double-toothed Kite on a nest, Guianan Slaty Antshrike, and Dusky Parrot all seen but the star must have been the Giant Anteater seen to walk out of the forest onto the track and back into the forest, by a lucky few. This encouraged a few to turn out after dinner with a spotlight onto the savannah in hope but only hearing a Tropical Screech Owl.
Day 15 Wednesday 29th March
The day started with an early breakfast before our transfer back to Georgetown, although some ventured out onto the savannah before dawn. Our transfer back to Rock View airstrip was carried out by two 4×4 pickups with three of the group acting as spotters on the high ‘shooting seat’. On route we made a few stops where birds were feeding and added Rufous-throated Sapphire to the list as well as good views of Purple-throated Fruitcrow and Grey-winged Trumpeter.
On arrival at Rock View our luggage and ‘persons’ were weighed for the flight and we then relaxed in the grounds with the first cold beer of the week followed by lunch.
The plane arrived early and we left bang on time in our 12 seater Islander and in 80 minutes we were landing at Ogle domestic airport and headed to our luxurious hotel Le Meridian Pegasus to freshen up.
A quick turn-round was required to go to the Botanical Gardens and zoo where we added another three species. A pair of Spotted Tody-flycatchers fed in a tree above us and a Little Cuckoo hunted insects in the grass. The prize was however the sought-after Blood-coloured Woodpecker seen by a fortunate few, its small size bright chestnut back and pale cheeks diagnostic. While some wondered through the adjacent zoo housing many species found in Guyana, others viewed the large heronry of Cattle and Great Egrets, Tri-coloured and Black-crowned Night Herons, before we returned to the hotel to sample the Italian pizzas and pasta at the poolside restaurant, where we said our fond farewells to Xavier who was not leaving until 31st.
Day 16 Thursday 30th March
A very early start found us gathered at 2.30am in the hotel lobby waiting for our transport to the airport to start the long journey home. Unfortunately the coach had a problem and we filled three taxis to arrive in plenty of time for checking to Barbados. We landed at Grantley Adams on Barbados to be collected by Steve from Johnsons tours for a whistle stop tour of the island which included a hearty breakfast and lunch. We also added a number of new birds including Black-faced Grassquit, Scale-necked Pigeon and even Moorhen, with a troop of African Green Monkeys crossing the road in front of us. We continued our journey home on our Virgin Atlantic flight, delayed an hour by two unruly passengers who had to be removed.
Arriving safely at 7.10am we collected our luggage and said our farewells after a long and eventful trip.
